WHAT
WE ARE ABOUT
Education
for
Ministry
is a distance-learning theological education program of the
School of Theology of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.
Since its beginning in 1975, more than 60,000 persons have completed the
four-year EfM
program in the United States and overseas. These people participated in
the EfM
program for many different reasons: a desire to increase their knowledge
of the Christian faith; a need to grow their spiritual development; or a
wish to prepare for a special ministry.
Participants commit one year at a time to meet regularly in seminars
led by a trained mentor.
WHAT
TO EXPECT
As
Christians, we desire a Christian education that supports our values and
prepares us to express our faith in day-to-day activities.
EfM
teaches us how to think theologically and increases our understanding of
our Christian heritage. Participants study the Bible, church history
and twentieth-century theology. The program builds on the three basic
concepts of the Episcopal Church: Christian Scripture, Christian
Tradition, and Reason.
The
EfM
group provides an opportunity to share thoughts and insights about
Christian faith with others. These discussions, which remain
confidential within the group, create a close community that grows
throughout the years.

OTHER
INFORMATION
The annual
tuition covers the cost of materials and an honorarium for the mentor.
Students will need a Bible and may wish to obtain additional reading
materials suggested by the program.
The
EfM
group meets weekly for 36 weeks each year to discuss the study
materials, worship together, and reflect theologically. Weekly lessons
and study guides are provided.
MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES
An
Education
for
Ministry
foundation produces an active, theologically articulate laity
and provides a comprehensive, experiential education that deepens our
Christian faith and provides us with confidence to take Christ’s
ministry into the world. As a result, participants become involved in
many ministries and grow to be better church school teachers, lay
ministers, Christian education directors, and church leaders.
Furthermore, after completing the four-year program, some graduates
become EfM
mentors. Mentor training is directed by The School of Theology at the
University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.
SCHEDULE
The
Education
for
Ministry
group meets for 36 weeks throughout the year, generally in the
evenings.
